Michelle Scullion Trio

The Michelle Scullion Trio brings a wealth of skill and experience to a varied repertoire of classic and original jazz. Michelle leads the trio on flutes (both concert and alto) and vocals, and she will be playing with Kevin Watson on acoustic guitar and vocals, and George Packard on double bass.

Michelle performed music with Kevin over 45 years ago and is thrilled to be back together making music with him again over the last 18 months in a variety of jazz and latin ensembles. Michelle has been performing with George on a number of projects and ensembles for the last 45 years.

The Trio share a love of jazz and bring with them an extended repertoire, including songs and music from the American Song Book, latin, funky grooves, swing and contemporary music. The programme will include originals by Kevin.

Michelle Scullion – Flutes

Michelle Scullion is a musician, composrer, musical director, performer and photographer who has been working professionally in the entertainment 8ndustry s9nce 1975. Her musical style is totally eclectic – from classical to jazz, blues to funk, new age to electronic, rock to latin and has a passion for World Music – music from all around the globe. As a musician she performs flutes, percussion and is a vocalist. She plays all flutes, including concert and alto flutes.

As a composer she has written and recorded music for film, television, theatre, radio, contemporary dance, public audiovisual works, corporate visuals and contemporary chamber music. She is currently composing a new work for String Orchestra, Piano and Percussion to be performed at the up-and-coming Nelson Composers Workshop – this year being held in Wellington.

She has recently performed in the ‘Kāpiti Celebs’ concert at Te Raukura ki Kāpiti, with Kevin in a jazz trio, and she also presented her recent composition ‘So Long Sir Jon’ in tribute to the late Sir Jon Trimmer at the same event.

Michelle has released 5 CD’s of her own music, one being a play along improvisation tuition guide, and recorded for over five decades on numerous albums, CD’s and other creative projects by many New Zealand composers and songwriters.

She has produced her musical theatric shows and public concerts within a wide genre of styles. She has her own Mac based studio where she records her work.

For film, she has composed the scores for 5 feature films, including ‘Bad Taste’ – director Sir Peter Jackson, many short films, documentaries, TV productions and corporate videos. She has also composed and recorded dance scores for some of New Zealand’s leading contemporary choreographers.

Kevin Watson – Acoustic Guitar and Vocals

Kevin Watson is one of New Zealand’s leading guitarists. Formerly based in Wellington, he worked on recording sessions, Radio and Television, and has toured with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. He is an accomplished singer, composer and arranger and has worked as musical director for shows in Wellington and Hawkes Bay.

He currently leads Hot Club Soda, who perform Jazz in Levin, Palmerston North and recently at the Manawhatu Jazz Festival. Michelle is proud to be part of this band.

George Packard – Double Bass

George Packard is a professional bass player and was a tertiary music educator. Trained classically on the cello, George’s first improvisational experiences were playing the ukulele along with the Rolling Stones, John Mayhal and The Band (in his bedroom). With little market for improvisational ukulele he took up the double bass. He has always enjoyed playing in bands that push the envelope and that give expression to the human soul. In his music career of over 40 years he has played extensively in many Wellington groups, performing on a number of occasions for the Wellington International Festival of the Arts, WOW, WOMAD and New Zealand Jazz festivals.
