Jimmy Rainey is a saxophonist and composer based in Christchurch. An award-winning graduate of the CPIT Jazz School, he plays in a variety of genres and settings – from traditional jazz to neo-soul.
Nick Dow is a 23-year–old New Zealand jazz pianist and songwriter who’s been part of all six Jazz in Martinborough festivals. After beginning violin, his love and talent for improvisation led him to jazz piano which he first explored while performing with Christ’s College’s Big Band. He composes and orchestrates music, and was privileged to perform and arrange for the NZ Pop’s Orchestra on a couple of occasions. Nick has toured the United States and Canada with the NZ Youth Choir, and performed in South Africa with the NZ Secondary Students Choir. He is currently completing his 4th year (honours) in Jazz Piano at Auckland University.
Jimmy and Nick have pulled together a collection of the classics with a modern touch. Their programme, including some of their own compositions, will get you toe-tapping even without bass and drums. These two have been a significant part of the music scene in Christchurch for several years and are continuing to grow as young musicians of New Zealand.
At Jazz in Martinborough 2016 they also join with The Damien Motu Collection to form The Senses Sextet.
